  18. <p>     Scholarship and fame rarely blend, but Charles Palliser, 42,
  19. a lecturer at Scotland's University of Strathclyde, seems to
  20. have the right mixture. He never expected The Quincunx, an
  21. 800-page Victorian-style mystery of wealth and vengeance on
  22. which he labored for twelve years, would be such a hot
  23. property. Ballantine Books plans a hefty U.S. printing next
  24. month, and the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Literary Guild
  25. have waged a six-figure bidding war over rights. "Every writer
  26. fantasizes that his novel will strike it big," says Palliser.
  27. "But if it happens, it's a fluke."
